Around Milan / Milan and its history

This tour will guide you to the discovery the ancient Milan by visiting the most representative monuments that for centuries have made Milan a unique city in the world. Piazza del Duomo , Castello Sforzesco , Arco della Pace , the beautiful streets of Brera and the many churches full of history will amaze you with their charm that remained unchanged over time. You’ll enjoy all of this while staying away from traffic and cycling through unknown paths.

Once all the participants are gathered, with helmets on and cameras ready to shoot, Nome Guida will take you and your bikes to the most ancient parts of Milan. The starting point of this tour is Brera, an historic area known all over the world. Brera is a maze of small streets, full of bars and cafes open at all hours, especially known for the artistic importance: The academy of fine arts and the Pinacoteca di Brera in fact reside in this area. Here you can also admire the beauty and charm of Basilica di San Marco and the Basilica di San Simpliciano.

After the narrow and mysterious streets of Brera, it’s time to take our bikes for a ride inside Parco Sempione, probably the most famous and appreciated park in Milan. Established in the ‘800s, this park contains several points of interest: the Civic Arena, the Aquarium of Milan, the Triennale and the famous Arco della Pace and Castello Sforzesco.Arco della Pace, dedicated to peace between European nations reached at the Congress of Vienna, is one of the most important monuments of the city in neoclassical style and overlooks Corso Sempione, symbol of Milan nightlife, a street that is especially crowded during Happy hour time in the summer. The Castello Sforzesco is probably, along with the Duomo, the most famous monument of Milan. In front of the main entrance you are greeted by a beautiful fountain that is surrounded by curious urban legends. The Castello Sforzesco is one of the largest castles in Europe and was built by Francesco Sforza in the fifteenth century.

Opposite to the Castle you will see Via Dante, a pedestrian street known for its trendy shops and cafes that host tourists throughout the year. Via Dante leads to Piazza dei Mercanti, founded in the thirteenth century and known by many as the “medieval living room of Milan”. A few steps from the square stands the Duomo of Milan. Symbol and heart of the city, the Duomo preserves the history of Milan. The construction of the building began in 1386, but the final result that gives us the Duomo today, has been reached only in 1800 and for this reason, the style of the building is not due to an artistic movement in particular, as the initial Gothic was reinterpreted in time. In addition to visiting the interior of this magnificent building it is also advisable to go upon top of it – unquestionably using the beautiful stairs and avoiding the elevator – on the famous terrace from which you can enjoy a wonderful view and see the famous gargoyles from a very close point of view.

Next to the cathedral you will find the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, a shopping arcade that connects the Duomo to Piazza della Scala and where you can admire the showcases of the most prestigious fashion brands that are the excellence of Made in Italy. At the end of the gallery you will reach Piazza della Scala which houses Palazzo Marino, the seat of the municipal administration of the city, and Teatro alla Scala, opened in 1778, it is one of the most famous and important theaters in the world.

Milan would not be the same without its Fashion, so our Nome Guida will take you for a ride in the famous Fashion District, where there’s the highest concentration of showroom area, boutiques, jewelers, shops and designers off the city. The Fashion district is composed by Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga, Via Manzoni and Corso Venezia. Right at the end of Corso Venezia you will reach one of the last stages of this tour: Parco Indro Montanelli and Giardini Privati del GAM, the modern art gallery of the city, within which you can admire the splendid Villa Belgioioso, jewel dating back to the end of the ‘700 and hidden in a small park where you can also admire a small lake inhabited by beautiful swans.
